Yes it really did look like this! The times people have asked me if I have hit the saturation button, or in some way photoshopped it......
I went to Bridgnorth with the intention of photographing the town from a bridge crossing the River Severn. As I set up with the sun setting to my left most of the colour was coming from over my shoulder. So I turned my tripod around and watched in amazement as the sky developed into what you see here. I have not witnessed as good a sky before or since in my 8 years seriously taking landscape photographs.
It reminds me of an erupting Volcano.
